Young Schumacher
This new project is just getting underway in south Bristol, coordinated by a member of our team. Ten young people (16-20 years old) are exploring sustainability through arts and digital media in a partnership with Knowle West Media Centre and the Schumacher Society.
Two facilitators were appointed and a programme of free sessions developed, linking with other communities and people in Bristol and around the world through eco trips, digital media, google earth, video conferencing and environmental arts.
The project begins with a barbeque in a city park which acts as a partnership and recruitment meeting.
Ten young people (16-20 years) from across south Bristol set up a new Eco Club where they have an opportunity to learn digital media skills creating photographs, digital stories, videos and an animated film, and discover more about nature, sustainability and the environment.
Artists and practitioners assist in creating film and digital media, documenting and helping popularise the thinking behind E.F. Schumacher's book Small is Beautiful.
The group meets one evening a week at a media centre, follows a programme of lectures and spends the summer holidays visiting sustainable businesses, organisations and communities in and around Bristol to help demonstrate that sustainability is possible.
The project is participatory and engaging, building on the achievements, ambitions and interests of young people. Artists and digital media practitioners help inspire and document the project as it develops, producing a film of a virtual journey around the world.
