Global Perspective

Working with Netherfield primary school on their African Drumming workshops helped turn an opportunity only available for year 6s into a whole school activity. The drumming workshops were held with a variety of people from the local area, and as well as making a 'magnificent noise' the pupils were also able to learn about the history and culture of different types of drumming.

Netherfield have also developed video conferencing links with a variety of different places in the world; their current favourite is Duncan, a diver on the Great Barrier Reef who shows the pupils (and many staff and parents) around reefs. The children came to the conference with many questions. After the conferences with Duncan, it has now become something of a tradition for the participants to eat a traditional Mauritian style breakfast prepared by one of their teachers who spent a her Easter holidays on an exchange there.

Netherfield have also held a multicultural week, whose theme was " A Grand Day Out". Each class swapped teachers on a rota basis and visited different areas of the world. They experienced the sights and sounds of Carnival time in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, went on safari and to a tropical rainforest. They learnt about the culture and major cities in Spain and went on the Trans Siberian Express. A busy but fulfilling week was had by all during which the children created lots of beautiful work, much if which is now on display in school. They are also involved in a "Travelling Notebook" project. Their notebook was received from a school in France and the idea is that it will travel around Europe with one school from each country completing a section. The children from Class 4M have put a class photograph and lots of interesting work in the book. We have forwarded the book to Germany and it will then be off to Belgium. We are not sure where it goes after this, but each school will all receive a copy of the completed "Notebook" to keep when it comes to its final destination.

Finally, although not strictly speaking a 'global citizenship' event, it is also worth mentioning that Netherfield pupils also participated in a video conference with the National Space Centre in Leicester as part of their learning journey, "Reach for the Stars". They discussed the conditions that astronauts have to live in when they are in Outer Space and were shown various artefacts such as a space hammer, space gloves and of course, a space toilet!
