The Research
Some of the best research into how businesses see themselves operating was conducted in the mid 1990s in the North East of England. The North East Competitiveness Project interviewed in-depth more than 500 companies to discover their key processes. The results of this seminal research concluded that seven key processes were common to all sectors and size, and that success depended upon how well a business understood each process and used that knowledge for commercial advantage. Within each process there were fundamental barriers or constraints which needed to be removed before higher levels of proficiency could be achieved. The more proficient a business became the more likely they were to succeed.
