Personal Learning & Thinking Skills and the Diploma

Many schools and colleges are currently focused on the new Diplomas, due to come in from September 2008.

Contented's activities contribute by accrediting Personal Learning & Thinking Skills (PLTS) that equip young people for future employment and lifelong learning. They are relevant to students in a wide range of contexts across the entire learning experience from Key Stage 3 onwards, including the new Diplomas.

Personal Learning and Thinking Skills require learners to be:

  • Independent enquirers
  • Creative thinkers
  • Reflective learners
  • Team workers
  • Self managers
  • Effective participators

All six of these skills are integrated into the assessment criteria for the mandatory Principal Learning component of the Diploma.

The first two waves of the diplomas, (known as 'lines-of-learning'), include the following subjects:

  • 2008: Creative and Media; IT; Engineering; Construction & the Built Environment & Society, Health and Development;
  • 2009: Environmental and Land-based Studies; manufacturing and Product Design; Hospitality; Hair & Beauty Studies; Business, Administration & Finance.
